What is counselling?
Counselling is a way of helping people when they are facing difficulties in their lives. People come to counselling for help in resolving their problems. It is often a lengthy process and central to it is the relationship built on trust and confidentiality between client and therapist.
The purpose of counselling is to help people make changes in their lives. It is not the same as giving advice, but more a way of empowering the client to become self-reliant, and capable of making their own choices.
Most people come to counselling due to anxiety, depression and stress. The most common reasons for these are rooted in relationship issues either in the present or the past, or developmental life changes. Counselling can help the client to become aware of the underlying causes of their problems and give them space and time to reflect on these.
